Lot 40 has been one of those brands I've quietly recommended to bartenders and whisky drinkers alike for years. The standard expression proved that Canadian rye could stand shoulder to shoulder with the best American offerings, and this Dark Oak variant takes things in a bolder, more muscular direction. Bottled at 48% ABV with no age statement, Lot 40 Dark Oak Canadian Rye Whisky is a serious rye that leans into heavy oak influence without losing the grain-forward character that makes the category so distinctive.

What makes this interesting from a production standpoint is the emphasis on dark oak maturation. In rye whisky, the interaction between grain and wood is everything. Rye as a grain brings spice, pepper, and a certain dry intensity that bourbon's corn-heavy mashbills simply don't deliver. When you push that spirit into heavily charred or toasted oak — which is what 'dark oak' implies — you're layering caramel sweetness and tannic structure on top of an already assertive base spirit. The 48% bottling strength is a smart choice here. It's high enough to carry the oak influence without overwhelming the drinker, and it gives you room to add a few drops of water if you want to open things up.

Canada doesn't get nearly enough credit for its rye whisky heritage. While American rye requires a minimum 51% rye in the mashbill, Canadian distillers have historically worked with 100% rye mashes for their flavouring components. Lot 40 sits in that tradition — this is proper rye whisky, not a blend with a little rye thrown in for marketing purposes. The Dark Oak expression takes that foundation and pushes it toward something richer and more full-bodied.

Tasting Notes

I'd encourage you to approach this one with an open mind. At 48%, give it a moment in the glass before nosing. The dark oak treatment should bring a deeper colour and weightier body than the standard Lot 40 bottling. Expect the interplay between rye spice and heavy oak char to be the defining characteristic — that push and pull between grain and barrel is what makes well-made rye whisky so compelling to drink.

The Verdict

At £67.25, Lot 40 Dark Oak sits in a competitive bracket. You're paying a premium over the standard expression, but you're getting a higher ABV and a more complex maturation profile. For a rye whisky at this strength with this level of oak influence, it represents fair value. It's not trying to be subtle — this is a whisky with a point of view, and I respect that. It does what it sets out to do confidently, and it rewards the drinker who takes time with it. A strong 7.6 out of 10 from me. It's a genuinely enjoyable pour that I'd happily keep on my shelf and reach for regularly.

Best Served

This is a natural Manhattan whisky. The dark oak character and rye spice were practically made for sweet vermouth and a dash of Angostura. Use a 2:1 ratio — 60ml of the Lot 40 Dark Oak to 30ml of a quality sweet vermouth like Cocchi di Torino — stir over ice for about 20 seconds, strain into a chilled coupe, and garnish with a Luxardo cherry. The oak richness fills out the cocktail beautifully. If you prefer it neat, a couple of drops of water will help if you find the 48% a touch warm on the first sip, but honestly it handles its strength well.
