I'll be honest — when someone hands me a Finnish rye whisky, my first instinct is curiosity, not scepticism. Kyrö has been making noise in the world whisky conversation for a few years now, and this 2018 vintage Heart Cut release is exactly the kind of bottle that reminds you why paying attention to what's happening outside the traditional whisky regions is worth your time.

Let's talk about what we're dealing with. This is a 4-year-old 100% rye whisky, bottled at a punchy 52% ABV. The 'Heart Cut' designation tells you Kyrö is being selective here — they're pulling the best portion of the distillation run, the sweet spot where the spirit has the most character and the least rough edges. At four years old, you're not getting a whisky that hides behind decades of oak influence. You're getting something that stands on the quality of its distillate, and at cask strength, there's nowhere to hide.

Rye is a grain I've always had a soft spot for. In American whiskey, rye in the mashbill brings spice, structure, and backbone. But European rye whisky is a different animal entirely. Finnish rye — grown in harsh Nordic conditions with short, intense growing seasons — tends to produce grain with real depth of flavour. When you distil that with care and bottle it without over-diluting, you get something that genuinely tastes like where it comes from. That sense of place is something I value enormously in a whisky.

At 52%, this has real weight on the palate. It's not a gentle sipper for the uninitiated — there's heat here, and it demands a moment of your attention. But that's part of the appeal. This is a whisky that asks you to slow down and engage with it. A few drops of water open it up considerably, and I'd recommend experimenting to find your sweet spot rather than drowning it.

Tasting Notes

I won't fabricate specifics here — this is a rye-forward whisky at cask strength with relatively young age, so expect the grain character to lead. Think bold cereal notes, baking spice, and that distinctive rye peppery kick. The four years in oak will contribute some sweetness and warmth without overwhelming the spirit's natural personality. The Heart Cut selection means you're getting cleaner, more refined flavours than a standard release.

The Verdict

At £55.50, Kyrö's Heart Cut sits in that appealing middle ground — it's not an impulse buy, but it's far from extravagant for a cask-strength, selectively cut whisky. You're paying for quality of distillate and honest bottling, not a fancy age statement or marketing story. For anyone who appreciates rye whisky and wants to understand what Nordic distillers are doing with the grain, this is a genuinely worthwhile bottle. It's bold, it's characterful, and it has the kind of integrity that makes me want to pour another glass. A 7.6 out of 10 feels right — this is a very good whisky that does exactly what it sets out to do, with room to grow as Kyrö's older stocks mature.

Best Served

Pour it neat in a Glencairn and add water gradually — start with three or four drops and work up. At 52%, it genuinely transforms with dilution. If you're in a cocktail mood, this is an outstanding base for a rye Old Fashioned. The natural spice and cereal character of Finnish rye paired with a good demerara sugar cube and a couple of dashes of Angostura creates something special — the grain's personality cuts right through the sweetness. Use a large ice cube, express an orange peel over the top, and you've got a drink that'll make you forget all about your usual bourbon pour.
