First Impressions
Hibiki 17 — the discontinued masterpiece. Part of the Hibiki range launched in 1989 to celebrate Suntory's 90th anniversary. The 24-faceted bottle represents the Japanese seasons. Discontinued in 2018 due to soaring demand outstripping aged stock, replaced by the NAS Hibiki Japanese Harmony.
The Blend
A marriage of malt whisky from Yamazaki and Hakushu with grain whisky from Chita. Multiple 'World's Best Blended Whisky' awards at the International Spirits Challenge and World Whiskies Awards. Whiskybase average approximately 88.5/100. Secondary market prices now regularly exceed £400-500.
Tasting
Honey-glazed peach nose with black liquorice and gentle smoke. Soft, custardy palate with caramel, honeyed oak, and yuzu. Long finish with oak, cocoa, and sherried citrus peel. The hallmark is seamless harmony — nothing sharp, never cloying, perfectly balanced.
The Verdict
Hibiki 17 earns a 9 — a benchmark Japanese blend and one of the finest blended whiskies ever produced. Its discontinuation remains one of the whisky world's greatest losses. At secondary market prices (£400+), it's a collector's item. But the liquid — when you find it — represents the art of Japanese blending at its peak.
