Tasting Notes

Nose

Soft nutty notes, light caramel, milk chocolate, apple, dried fruit, tropical fruit, brown spice, mint, brown sugar, toasted oak — the malt adding a different dimension

Palate

Sweet cornbread and malt grain mingling with oak and baking chocolate, peppery heat, deep cherry — rich and full-bodied, the new charred oak asserting itself

Finish

Burst of peppery spice giving way to creamy malt ball character, ending with a lingering cocoa coating — the Kentucky charred oak defining the style

Expert Review

7/10

One of the first major Kentucky straight malt whiskeys — helping establish an entirely new category. Mashbill: 51% malted barley, 47% corn, 2% rye. Aged in new charred oak barrels (bourbon-style, not Scotch-style used casks). From the same Versailles distillery dating to 1812. American single malt made the Kentucky way.
