Tasting Notes

Nose

Sweet, grassy, softly peaty — coastal ozone, salt, old bandages, floral maltiness, liquorice, soft muddy peat, the 'lightest' Islay but still unmistakably Islay

Palate

Soft and sweet entry — lovely dry spicy peat, a touch of ashy smoke, chocolatey malt waves, nutty oak, the peat subdued and allowing other flavours to emerge

Finish

Short to medium — soft dry spicy peat, grassy malt, lemon juice, ashy smoke, a little brine, clean and inviting

Expert Review

8/10

The gentlest Islay — peat that whispers rather than shouts. Caol Ila is the largest distillery on Islay yet one of the least known, supplying much of the malt for Johnnie Walker blends. The 12 Year Old is sweet, grassy, and softly peaty with coastal ozone and salt. The perfect entry to peated whisky for newcomers.
