First Impressions
Woodford Reserve Rye — made using the same triple-distillation process as the bourbon (copper pot still, column still, then pot still again) at the same Versailles distillery that dates to 1812. Mashbill: 53% rye, 33% corn, 14% malted barley.
Kentucky-Style Rye
A grain-forward Kentucky-style rye rather than a high-rye monster like WhistlePig's 100%. The corn gives it sweetness that softens the rye spice. Launched around 2015 as a permanent line extension. 45.2% ABV (90.4 proof).
Tasting
Cherry bubblegum and brown sugar nose with vanilla. Oily palate of dark brown sugar, dried fruits, and tobacco with barrel char. The finish brings pepper and leather fading into pear and honey. Versatile for cocktails (especially Manhattans) and neat sipping.
The Verdict
Woodford Reserve Rye earns a 7 — an approachable, versatile rye from one of Kentucky's most historic distilleries. At £38, fair value. Not a standout for rye purists seeking intense spice, but the triple distillation and Kentucky heritage give it refinement. The same Versailles stills, a different grain story.
