White Horse / Litre Blended Scotch Whisky

Type: Blended
ABV: 40%
Price: £36.25

White Horse is one of those blends that's been quietly doing its job for over a century, and yet it rarely gets the credit it deserves in an era obsessed with single malts and limited editions. The litre format at £36.25 positions this squarely as an everyday drinker — and I mean that as a compliment. Not every whisky needs to be an occasion. Some just need to be reliable, and White Horse has built its reputation on exactly that.

For those unfamiliar, White Horse is a blended Scotch with deep roots in the Lagavulin distillery, which has historically supplied a significant portion of its malt component. That Islay connection gives White Horse something most blends at this price point simply don't have: a whisper of smoke and coastal character sitting beneath the typical grain sweetness. It's not a peat bomb by any stretch, but there's a savoury backbone here that sets it apart from the parade of identikit blends lining supermarket shelves.

At 40% ABV and without an age statement, this is a blend designed for accessibility. The NAS designation is standard practice at this tier — you're not paying for age, you're paying for consistency. And White Horse delivers that. Batch after batch, year after year, the profile stays remarkably steady. From an industry perspective, that's no small feat. Blending at scale to maintain a recognisable house style requires genuine skill, even if it rarely makes headlines.

Tasting Notes

I won't fabricate specifics here — this is a whisky best understood by category and style rather than flowery descriptor lists. What I will say is that White Horse sits in the slightly richer, more characterful end of the budget blend spectrum. If you've found blends like Famous Grouse or Grant's a bit too neutral for your taste, White Horse offers a step in a more interesting direction without asking you to remortgage. That subtle smokiness and a slightly oily texture give it more presence than the price tag suggests.

The Verdict

At £36.25 for a full litre, White Horse represents genuinely good value. That works out at roughly £27 for a standard 700ml equivalent, which puts it comfortably below most of its competitors while arguably outperforming several of them. It's not going to challenge a well-aged single malt — it was never meant to. But as a daily pour, a cocktail base with actual character, or something to keep in the cabinet for guests who "just want a Scotch," it punches above its weight. A 7.6 feels right: this is a solid, dependable blend with just enough personality to keep things interesting. The Islay heritage in its DNA is the secret weapon that most people never notice but would miss if it weren't there.

Best Served

White Horse works beautifully in a simple highball — a good measure over ice, topped with chilled soda water and a strip of lemon peel. The carbonation lifts that subtle smokiness and makes it extraordinarily refreshing. It's also one of the few budget blends I'd genuinely recommend in a Rob Roy; the slight savoury note plays well with sweet vermouth. Neat or with a splash of water is perfectly fine too, but this blend really comes alive when you give it a bit of context to work with.
