Tasting Notes

Nose

Caramel, butterscotch, orange peel, rye spice, oak and a herbal mint lift.

Palate

Rich and oily — caramel, vanilla, allspice, black pepper, toasted oak and dark fruit.

Finish

Long, warming, peppery and lingering on toffee and oak.

Whistlepig 10 is the bottle that rewrote the rules. When it arrived, premium rye was a niche corner of the whiskey world; ten years later it had become a category of its own, and Whistlepig — that improbable Vermont farm with a pig on the label — was at the head of the parade. The juice in those early bottles was famously sourced from Canada, blended and bottled in Vermont, and finished into something the founders could call their own. Today the farm distils as well, but the 10 year remains the flagship that started it all.

The nose is generous and confident. Caramel and butterscotch lead, then orange peel, then the unmistakable green-spice lift of 100 percent rye mash. Behind it all sits oak and a cool herbal mint note that rye lovers chase like perfume.

The palate is rich and oily, far more luxurious than the proof would suggest. Caramel and vanilla coat the tongue, allspice and black pepper rise through the middle, and a quiet wash of dark fruit — fig, raisin — sits underneath the whole thing. The toasted oak provides structure without dominating. At 100 proof it has all the body it needs.

The finish is long and warming, peppery at first then settling into toffee and oak that lingers far longer than you expect. A drop of water opens the fruit; an ice cube changes the whole personality without ruining anything.

Whistlepig 10 is no longer the only premium rye in the room, but it still feels like the host. It earned its place at the top of the shelf the hard way — by being very, very good.
