Tasting Notes

Nose

Rye spice, orange peel, caramel, oak, hints of mint and dill

Palate

Bold rye pepper, butterscotch, allspice, vanilla, dried fruit, cracked black pepper

Finish

Long, warming, oak-driven with lingering rye spice and a touch of mint

First Impressions

Bottled at a confident 100 proof, WhistlePig 10 set a new bar for straight rye when it launched in 2010.

Distillery & Heritage

Founded in 2007 by Raj Bhakta on a 500-acre farm, WhistlePig was the first major brand to champion 100% rye at premium age statements. The late master distiller Dave Pickerell, formerly of Maker's Mark, masterminded the blending.

Tasting Notes in Detail

The nose opens with classic rye signatures — orange oil, baking spice, a whisper of dill — over a base of caramel and oak. The palate is muscular: pepper and allspice up front, butterscotch and vanilla in the mid.

Verdict

Still the benchmark sub-£100 straight rye.
