Tasting Notes

Nose

An initial musk turns to savory, with a whisper of blanched almond and then a white pepper kick at the end, all set upon a foundation with the bright warmth of freshly-baked whole wheat bread.

Palate

A touch of traditional rye grassiness pops up immediately, though with a soft rather than harsh vegetal quality. It then deepens into toasted, almost burnt, nuts. Very hot and spicy rye grain comes through at the back palate, with the finish lightening up considerably with vanilla sweetness. Long finish.

Michter’s 10 Year Rye 2023 landed on my desk at 46.4% ABV, aged minimum 10 years, single barrel, l, carrying a $200 Bright reddish orange, many quick, even legs price tag. Here is what I found.

Finish

Not a lot of particular nuanced flavors come through, but that doesn’t take away from how delightful this whiskey is. In fact, I often find this to be the case with the best, or maybe just my favorite, whiskeys. While I prefer it straight, a touch of water definitely softens some of the heat and may be more approachable for most people.rnrnI’ve had many Michter’s products over the years, including differing years of this expression, and this bottle absolutely holds up. This expression is an absolute standard in the field of rye whiskey.

The Bottom Line

Michter’s 10 Year Rye 2023 is outstanding — one of those bottles that reminds you why you fell in love with whiskey in the first place. If you see it at $200 Bright reddish orange, many quick, even legs, do not hesitate. This one earns a permanent spot on the shelf.
