Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled Special Release Tennessee Rye Whiskey — the question is whether it delivers on its promise. I sat down with a pour to find out.
Nose
On the nose are aromas of molasses, poached fruit, baking spices and hints of Red Hot candy.
Palate
There’s a lot of heat on the palate with flavors of black pepper, leather, tobacco leaves, burnt citrus, cinnamon, and toasted oak. The aggressive heat on the palate results in a slow burn of a long finish with lots of cinnamon and nutmeg spiciness. The texture is slightly grainy and there’s not a lot of complexity due to the generous amount of heat generated by its high proof. This expression is definitely for the more initiated Tennessee rye whiskey drinker and not for newcomers who are looking for a smooth, more approachable rye whiskey experience.

The Bottom Line
Jack Daniel’s Twice Barreled Special Release Tennessee Rye Whiskey is a perfectly respectable whiskey that does what it sets out to do. — it will not blow your mind, but it will not disappoint you either. A reliable choice.
