Togouchi is produced by Sakurao Distillery (formerly Chugoku Jozo) in Hiroshima Prefecture, and the whisky is matured in a disused railway tunnel through the mountains of western Honshu. The tunnel provides a naturally cool, humid environment with minimal temperature variation — conditions that are ideal for slow, gentle maturation. The Premium expression blends malt and grain whiskies, some of which are sourced internationally and blended with domestic spirit.
The tunnel maturation is the brand's most distinctive feature, though its impact on the final whisky is debatable. The consistent cool temperature produces a slower, gentler maturation than the warehouse conditions of most distilleries, but the effect is subtle rather than transformative. The blend itself is light and approachable, designed for easy drinking rather than serious contemplation.
Togouchi Premium is an affordable Japanese blended whisky that benefits from a compelling story and modest but genuine quality. It will not satisfy drinkers seeking the complexity of Yamazaki or the intensity of Chichibu, but for everyday drinking and for those drawn to the romance of tunnel-aged whisky, it offers a pleasant, well-made experience at a fair price. The concept is more interesting than the liquid, but neither is without merit.
