The Tottori Blended / Kurayoshi World Blended Whisky

Type: Japanese
ABV: 43%
Price: £52.50

Japanese whisky has a reputation problem right now. Everyone wants it, nobody can get enough of it, and the price tags have gone from reasonable to ridiculous in under a decade. So when something lands on your desk at £52.50 that claims a Japanese pedigree, you pay attention — but you also ask questions.

The Tottori Blended, also marketed as Kurayoshi World Blended Whisky, sits in interesting territory. That dual naming tells you something straight away: this is a blend that draws from both Japanese and international malt and grain stocks. The Matsui Shuzo distillery in Tottori prefecture is behind this one, and they've been upfront about sourcing globally for their blended range. I actually respect that transparency. In a category where vague labelling has burned consumers more than once, knowing what you're getting into matters.

At 43% ABV, it sits just above the minimum for a lot of markets, which gives it a touch more body than your standard 40% bottling. It's NAS — no age statement — which in 2026 is practically the norm for accessible Japanese-adjacent releases. The real question is whether the liquid justifies the price.

Tasting Notes

I won't fabricate specifics here. What I can tell you is that the Tottori Blended leans into the lighter, more approachable end of the Japanese whisky spectrum. This is a blend built for drinkability rather than complexity. Think clean, think smooth, think easy-going. If you've had other Matsui releases, you'll recognise a house style that favours gentle sweetness and soft grain character over heavy peat or aggressive oak. It's a whisky that wants you to enjoy it without overthinking things — and honestly, there's a place for that.

The Verdict

Here's where I land on The Tottori Blended: it's a solid everyday drinker that does what it sets out to do. It's approachable, well-constructed, and genuinely pleasant to spend time with. At £52.50, you're paying a premium over comparable blends from Scotland or Ireland, but you're also getting something that feels distinct — that lightness and precision that good Japanese-influenced blending delivers.

Is it the most complex whisky on my shelf? No. But not every bottle needs to be a homework assignment. Sometimes you want something clean and dependable that pairs well with food, works in a highball, and doesn't punish you for pouring a second glass on a Tuesday night. The Tottori delivers on all of those fronts.

Where it loses half a point for me is value. At this price, I'd love to see either an age statement or a bit more character in the blend. The competition at the £50 mark is fierce, and while this holds its own on quality, it doesn't quite punch above its weight. A 7.6 out of 10 — genuinely good whisky that I'd happily recommend, with the caveat that you're partly paying for the category's current cachet.

Best Served

This was made for a Japanese-style highball. Fill a tall glass with ice, pour a measure, top with cold soda water at a 1:3 ratio, and stir exactly once. Add a strip of lemon peel if you're feeling fancy. The light, clean profile opens up beautifully with carbonation, and it's the kind of drink that makes a weeknight dinner feel like an occasion. If highballs aren't your thing, it also works neat as an aperitif — pour it cold and let it warm up slowly in the glass.
