Tasting Notes

Nose

Bright rye spice, vanilla, baked apple, mint, and a snap of black pepper.

Palate

Full-bodied — caramel, cinnamon, dried orange peel, clove, and a green herbal lift across the middle.

Finish

Long, warm, peppery, with oak, mint, and a last note of toasted brown sugar.

Maryland was once one of the great rye regions of America, its style softer and rounder than the harder Pennsylvania monster ryes, with a herbal lift that came from the local grain and the Chesapeake water. Prohibition ended that tradition almost entirely. Sagamore Spirit, founded by Under Armour's Kevin Plank and built on the Baltimore waterfront, set out to bring it back.

The Cask Strength Rye is the distillery's high-proof flagship, a blend of two mash bills — one high-rye, one lower-rye — that are married together and bottled uncut at around 112.2 proof. Sagamore filters its limestone water from a spring on Plank's Sagamore Farm in Maryland horse country, the same farm that once produced the racehorse Native Dancer, and pipes it down to the city distillery.

The nose is bright and unmistakably rye — spice up front, then vanilla, baked apple, mint, and a final snap of black pepper that announces the proof without aggression. The palate is full-bodied and confident. Caramel and cinnamon arrive together, then dried orange peel and clove move in, and a green herbal lift runs across the middle of the tongue — that distinctive Maryland-style note, the thing the whole revival is for.

The finish is long, warm, peppery, with oak and mint trading places before a last note of toasted brown sugar settles in. It is rye with both edge and character, a thoughtful tribute to a lost regional style and a perfectly modern dram on its own terms. For anyone curious about American whiskey beyond the Kentucky borders, this is essential drinking — proof that the map is wider than the bourbon trail suggests.
