The Three Swallow takes its name from the label of the original Powers bottling, a nod to the birds said to have nested at the John's Lane distillery on Dublin's Thomas Street. When John Power and Son merged into Irish Distillers and production shifted to Midleton, the single pot still tradition carried with it — and this release is a deliberate homage to that lineage.
Matured in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-oloroso sherry casks, Three Swallow sits at 40% ABV and leans into the softer, fruitier side of pot still character rather than the muscular spice of its older siblings. It is an approachable gateway into the style, but one with enough backbone to reward attention.
The nose opens on green orchard fruit and honeysuckle, with vanilla and cinnamon from the bourbon wood rounding out the edges. On the palate the classic pot still creaminess is evident — that slightly oily, grain-forward texture that only unmalted and malted barley distilled together can produce. Clove, pepper and toasted almond ride alongside baked pear, while the sherry influence adds a whisper of dried fruit without dominating.
The finish is medium and dry, leaving behind pepper, honey and a clean barley note. It is not a hugely complex dram, but it is honest, well-balanced and distinctively Powers — a reminder that single pot still whiskey is Ireland's own, and that the house style of Powers leans toward elegance rather than bombast. A worthy daily pour and a fine introduction to the category.
