Tasting Notes

Nose

Vanilla, honey, milk chocolate, caramelised green apple, peach, banana, roasted coffee, damp oak — extraordinarily complex nose

Palate

Creamy and smooth — butterscotch, custard, vanilla, burnt sugar, ripe fruit — apple, lemon, mango — soft, oily, well-balanced texture

Finish

Medium-long and warm — lingering spice and oak, the Master Distiller's cask selection evident in every note, refined and elegant

First Impressions

Midleton Very Rare — created in 1984 by legendary Master Distiller Barry Crockett as a once-a-year prestige bottling. Each vintage is unique, with the Master Distiller selecting a small number of exceptional casks from Midleton's vast warehouses.

The Annual Selection

Now overseen by Kevin O'Gorman, the Master Distiller hand-selects single pot still and grain whiskeys from rare casks for each release. No two vintages are identical. The result is one of the most collectible annual Irish whiskey releases. 40% ABV.

Tasting

Complex nose of vanilla, honey, and caramelised green apple. Creamy palate of butterscotch, custard, and ripe fruit. Medium-long finish with lingering spice and oak. Soft, oily, and beautifully balanced.

The Verdict

Midleton Very Rare earns an 8.5 — a benchmark of refined Irish whiskey craftsmanship. At £165, premium but justified by the hand-selected casks and unique vintage character. Some find it 'a touch tame' for the price, but the smoothness and elegance are undeniable. Barry Crockett's 1984 creation, still delivering four decades later.
