Michter's is one of those brands that divides opinion in whiskey circles, and I think that's partly what makes them interesting. The US*1 Single Barrel Straight Rye sits in their core lineup, bottled at 42.4% ABV with no age statement. What Michter's will tell you is that they select barrels based on taste rather than hitting a specific age target — and having spent time with this bottle, I'm inclined to believe that philosophy works in their favour.

Rye whiskey, by law, must contain at least 51% rye grain in its mashbill. That matters because rye is the grain that brings spice, pepper, and a drier character compared to the sweeter corn-heavy bourbons most people start with. It's the backbone grain, the one that gives structure. Michter's doesn't publicly disclose their exact mashbill for this expression, but the rye influence is unmistakable in the glass. This is a whiskey that knows what it is.

At 42.4%, it's bottled just above the legal minimum of 40%, which keeps it approachable without stripping away character. Barrel entry proof is something I always think about with American whiskey — Michter's has been vocal about entering their barrels at a lower proof than the legal maximum of 125°, which generally means the spirit picks up more nuanced wood influence during maturation rather than just brute tannin extraction. The single barrel designation means each bottle comes from one individual cask, so there will be subtle variation from barrel to barrel. That's part of the charm.

Tasting Notes

I won't fabricate specific notes here — tasting is subjective and I'd rather you discover your own. What I will say is that this rye delivers exactly what you'd want from the category: it's dry where bourbon would be sweet, structured where blends might be soft. The 42.4% ABV makes it genuinely easy to drink neat without needing water, which isn't always the case with rye.

The Verdict

At £61.75, you're paying a premium over some perfectly good rye options on the market. But Michter's earns that price through consistency and careful barrel selection. This isn't a whiskey that's trying to be everything to everyone — it's a well-made, single barrel straight rye that rewards attention. The NAS designation might put off age-statement purists, but I've always believed that what's in the glass matters more than a number on the label. This one scores a 7.8 out of 10 from me. It's a confident, well-executed rye that I'd happily keep on my shelf and reach for regularly.

Best Served

This is a natural Manhattan whiskey. The dry, spiced character of rye is exactly why the cocktail was originally built around it — sweet vermouth and a dash of Angostura bitters complement rye's structure beautifully. Use a 2:1 ratio of rye to vermouth, stir over ice for about 30 seconds, strain into a chilled coupe, and garnish with a brandied cherry. The Michter's US*1 Rye has enough personality to hold its own against the vermouth without bulldozing it. If you prefer it neat, give it five minutes in the glass before your first sip — a little air opens it up nicely.
