First Impressions
Bottled from individual casks at 42.4% ABV, Michter's US*1 Single Barrel Rye is unusual in its category — most American ryes lean louder. Michter's instead leans elegant, and the result is one of the most cocktail-friendly ryes on the shelf without ever feeling shy neat.
Distillery & Heritage
Michter's claims a heritage rye recipe descended from the original Pennsylvania Michter's distillery — Pennsylvania being, of course, the historical heart of American rye whiskey. The modern Kentucky operation continues the tradition with low-proof barrel entry and slow maturation under Dan McKee's direction.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose is unmistakably rye — bread crust, fresh mint, a curl of orange zest — but layered over soft vanilla rather than raw spice. The palate brings classic peppery rye character alongside butterscotch, clove and a drizzle of dark honey. The finish is medium-length, drying on oak with that mint-and-caramel signature that makes a great Manhattan.
Verdict
If your idea of rye is brash and burning, Michter's will recalibrate you. Polished, balanced, and one of the best gateway sippers in the category.
