Kyrö Distillery was born from a conversation in a sauna — as many things in Finland are — when a group of friends decided that their country's exceptional rye grain deserved to be turned into whisky. Located in Isokyrö, a small town in the Ostrobothnia region, the distillery uses 100% Finnish whole-grain rye, malted in-house, to produce a spirit of remarkable intensity and character. The Malt Rye is the core expression of this vision.
The rye character here is uncompromising. Where American ryes often balance their grain with corn sweetness, Kyrö lets the rye speak alone — dark, peppery, bread-like, with a savoury depth that recalls the dense loaves of Nordic baking tradition. At 47.2%, the spirit has the strength to carry this intensity without aggression, and the maturation in a combination of new American oak and ex-sherry casks adds sweetness and structure without softening the grain's assertive personality.
Finland's extreme climate — sub-zero winters and warm summers — creates dramatic temperature swings in the warehouse, driving an active maturation cycle that concentrates flavour. The result is a young whisky that drinks with more depth than its age would suggest. Kyrö Malt Rye is one of the most distinctive rye whiskies produced anywhere in the world, a whisky that could only come from this place and this grain. For rye enthusiasts tired of the bourbon-inflected American style, this is a revelatory alternative. Nordic whisky at its most confident and compelling.
