Ichiro's Malt & Grain has become one of the most talked-about names in Japanese whisky over the past decade, and for good reason. Ichiro Akuto's operation at Chichibu — blending his own malt with carefully sourced grain whisky — has built a reputation for punching well above its weight. This 2023 release of the Malt & Grain Japanese Blended Whisky lands at a confident 48% ABV, no age statement, and a price tag of £1,500 that will make you sit up straight. So does it justify the spend? I think it gets remarkably close.

What sets Ichiro's Malt & Grain apart from the wave of NAS Japanese releases flooding the market is intentionality. This isn't a blend assembled to fill a gap on a shelf. The malt and grain components are married with real care — you can feel the balance the moment you nose the glass. At 48%, it's bottled at a strength that gives the whisky room to express itself without overwhelming you with heat. That's a sweet spot that a lot of producers miss, and Ichiro nails it consistently.

The NAS designation shouldn't put you off here. Chichibu's relatively young stock has always shown a maturity beyond its years, and the blending is where the magic happens. This is a whisky that feels layered and considered. It rewards patience — pour it, let it sit for ten minutes, then come back to it. The character shifts and opens in the glass in a way that keeps you engaged.

Tasting Notes

I want to be upfront — I'm not going to fabricate specific tasting descriptors beyond what I experienced directly. What I can tell you is this: the Malt & Grain line consistently delivers a profile that balances soft fruit character with gentle spice and a clean, precise finish. The grain component adds texture and sweetness without making it feel thin or overly sweet. At 48%, there's enough backbone to carry weight on the palate. Expect something refined but not boring — there's a quiet complexity here that keeps pulling you back for another sip.

The Verdict

At £1,500, this is firmly in the collector and serious enthusiast category. Let's not pretend otherwise. But within the world of sought-after Japanese whisky — where bottles regularly clear five figures at auction — this actually represents a genuine drinking experience rather than just a trophy bottle. I'd rate this 8.3 out of 10. It's excellent. The blending is precise, the bottling strength is right, and it delivers on the promise of Ichiro's growing legacy. Where it loses that last point or two is in the value conversation — at this price, I want to be absolutely floored, and while this is very, very good, it stops just short of transcendent. Still, if you have the budget and you appreciate Japanese craft at a high level, this is a bottle worth owning and — crucially — worth opening.

Best Served

Pour this neat in a tulip glass at room temperature. Give it a solid ten minutes to breathe before your first sip. If you want to experiment, add three or four drops of soft mineral water — it opens up beautifully. I'd also suggest trying a small measure in a proper Japanese-style mizuwari: one part whisky to two parts chilled still water, stirred gently. It sounds counterintuitive at this price point, but the Malt & Grain's layered character actually shines in a long serve. Pair it with lightly salted edamame or a clean white fish sashimi — something that won't compete with the whisky's subtlety.
