First Impressions
High West Double Rye is exactly what it says: a blend of two ryes, one young and aggressive, one older and softer. The combination gives you the peppery hit of a youthful rye with a smoothing layer of mature whisky behind it.
Distillery & Heritage
Founded by David Perkins in 2006, High West was Utah's first legal distillery since the 1870s and made its name as a master blender, sourcing exceptional whiskey (notably from MGP in Indiana) while building out its own distillation in Park City. Double Rye blends a 95% rye mashbill from MGP with a higher-corn 'barely-legal' rye, producing something more layered than either component alone. The brand is now owned by Constellation Brands but remains stylistically distinct.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose explodes with classic rye herbaceousness — mint, dill, eucalyptus — over vanilla and bright peppercorn. The palate is spicy and lively: cinnamon, caramel, citrus peel, that signature herbal lift. The finish is medium-long, dry and peppery with menthol and oak.
Verdict
One of the best Manhattan ryes on the planet, and a brilliant neat sipper for anyone who likes their whiskey loud and aromatic.
