Hibiki 21 is widely regarded as the finest blended whisky in the world. Released by Suntory and crafted by master blenders drawing on aged stocks from Yamazaki, Hakushu and the Chita grain distillery, it has won the title of World's Best Blended Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards more times than any other expression in history.
The name Hibiki means 'resonance' or 'harmony' in Japanese, and the bottle itself — 24 facets representing the seasons of the old Japanese calendar — speaks to the philosophy behind the blend. Every component must sing together.
The nose is immediately recognisable as Hibiki: honeyed apricot, candied orange peel, sandalwood and rose petal, with the warm raisin note of well-aged sherry casks beneath. The mizunara oak, Suntory's signature, drifts through like temple incense.
The palate is silky and harmonious. Peach, dried mango and cocoa nib are layered with oak spice and manuka honey, while the mizunara perfume threads quietly through the centre. Nothing is loud; nothing is missing. Every note resolves into the next.
The finish is long, polished and graceful, leaving behind oak, dried fruit and that lingering whisper of incense. Hibiki 21 is a benchmark — proof that blending, in the right hands, is not lesser than single malt but a different art form entirely.
