Glen Ord is one of those distilleries that quietly gets on with producing excellent spirit while the flashier names hog the limelight. Situated in the Black Isle region of the Highlands, it has long served as a workhorse for Diageo's blending operations — which means independent bottlings like this one from Signatory Vintage are where you find the distillery's true character, unmasked and unblended.

This particular release is part of Signatory's 100 Proof Edition series — Edition 66, to be precise — bottled at a muscular 57.1% ABV from 2016 stock at just nine years old. That's young enough to raise an eyebrow, but old enough, at cask strength, to show real substance. The 100 Proof range has built a deserved reputation for showcasing distillery character without the polish of age or the intervention of heavy cask influence, and this Glen Ord fits that brief perfectly.

What to Expect

At nine years and natural strength, you should expect a whisky that leads with cereal-forward Highland character — that slightly waxy, malty backbone Glen Ord is known for among those who pay attention. The higher ABV will carry oils and texture that a standard 40% bottling simply cannot deliver. This is a whisky that rewards patience: a few drops of water will open it considerably, and I would strongly recommend giving it ten minutes in the glass before forming any opinions. Cask strength Highland malt at this age tends to be expressive and a touch spirited on first pour, but settles into something genuinely engaging.

The 100 Proof series is bottled without chill filtration and at natural colour, which means what you're getting in the glass is an honest representation of what came out of the cask. No shortcuts, no cosmetic adjustments. For under fifty pounds, that level of transparency from a distillery of Glen Ord's calibre is genuinely hard to argue with.

The Verdict

I have a soft spot for Glen Ord. It is consistently undervalued, and bottlings like this one from Signatory only reinforce that view. At £46.95, you are paying remarkably little for a cask-strength, independently bottled Highland single malt — the kind of whisky that would cost half again as much if it carried a more fashionable distillery name on the label. The nine-year age statement is modest, yes, but the 57.1% ABV and Signatory's reliable cask selection more than compensate. This is a serious dram at a price that does not take itself too seriously.

I am giving this a 7.8 out of 10. It is a well-made, honest Highland malt that over-delivers for its price point. It lacks the complexity that another five years in wood might bring, but what it offers right now — character, strength, and value — is more than enough to earn its place on a shelf that matters.

Best Served

Neat, with a few drops of water to tame the 57.1% ABV — this is a whisky that genuinely transforms with dilution. Alternatively, it has the backbone for a superb Highball: plenty of ice, quality soda, and a strip of lemon peel. At this strength, it holds its ground against the carbonation without losing its identity.
