At £198, this is not a casual purchase. But for those drawn to the less-travelled corners of Scotch production, it warrants serious attention.

What makes this bottling compelling is its identity. Scottish rye whisky remains a rarity. While American rye has long dominated that grain conversation, Arbikie's commitment to field-to-bottle production — growing their own grain on the estate — gives this release a provenance that most distilleries simply cannot claim. The involvement of Francis Boag, whose career spans decades in Scottish distilling, lends further credibility. This is not a novelty project. It is a considered attempt to demonstrate what Highland-grown rye can become in the hands of someone who understands the craft.

Bottled at 46% without chill filtration, the Artist Edition 1 signals confidence in the spirit itself. That is a strength. I believe this delivers on that count, not through age or rarity for its own sake, but through sheer originality of concept. Scottish rye is a category still finding its feet, and Arbikie is leading that conversation. If the subsequent Artist Editions build on this foundation, we may look back on this first release as the start of something significant.

Pour this neat, at room temperature, in a Glencairn or tulip glass. Give it ten minutes to open. If you find the rye spice a touch assertive, a few drops of still water will soften things without losing the grain character. This is a whisky that rewards patience and attention — it was not made for mixing, and it would be a disservice to dilute its distinctiveness in a cocktail. Sit with it. Let the spirit speak for itself.
