Tasting Notes

Nose

Aggressive rye spice, dill, mint, baked apple and toasted oak.

Palate

Bold and spicy — black pepper, clove, caraway, vanilla and dark honey.

Finish

Long, dry and herbaceous, with cinnamon, mint and lingering oak.

Bulleit Rye is built on a famously assertive 95% rye, 5% malted barley mashbill — one of the most rye-forward recipes on the American market — and the brand's Barrel Strength expression takes that recipe and bottles it uncut, unfiltered and at full proof straight from the barrel. The result is one of the most uncompromising rye whiskies you can buy at a reasonable price.

The nose is exactly what you would hope for: aggressive rye spice, fresh dill, garden mint and a deep herbal undertow, layered over baked apple, toasted oak and a faint waft of caraway and aniseed. There is sweetness here too — vanilla and brown sugar — but it sits underneath the spice rather than fighting it. A splash of water tames the heat and releases more orchard fruit and honeyed grain.

On the palate the proof is felt immediately, but the rye character is what dominates: black pepper, clove, that same dill and mint, and a cracker-like grain note that rides the whole length of the mouth. Vanilla and dark honey provide just enough sweetness to keep the whisky balanced, and a slightly oily texture coats the palate impressively for a rye at this price point.

The finish is long, dry and decidedly herbaceous — cinnamon, mint, oak and that signature rye-bread spice — and the whole experience leaves no doubt about what kind of whisky you have just drunk. As a sipper for rye purists or as a fortified base for a serious Manhattan or Sazerac, Bulleit 95 Rye Barrel Strength is a confident, character-rich expression of one of America's defining rye recipes.
