This was made for a Manhattan. Cask-strength rye stands up to sweet vermouth without getting lost — use a 2:1 ratio with a quality Italian vermouth, a couple dashes of Angostura, and stir it properly over ice for a good 30 seconds. The high proof means the rye character punches through the vermouth rather than being buried by it. Neat with a few drops of water is equally rewarding if you want to explore the whiskey on its own terms.
