There's a quiet confidence to the Amahagan series that I find increasingly compelling. Edition No 3, the Mizunara Finish, sits at an interesting crossroads — a world blended whisky finished in Japanese Mizunara oak, bottled at a robust 47% ABV. It's the kind of bottle that makes you pay attention, not because it's shouting, but because it knows exactly what it's doing.

World blended whiskies occupy a peculiar space in the market right now. They're neither bound by the strict regulations of Scotch nor riding the hype wave of single-origin Japanese releases. What they offer instead is creative freedom, and the Amahagan range has used that freedom well. Edition No 3 takes component whiskies from multiple origins and runs them through a Mizunara finish — a choice that immediately signals ambition, given that Mizunara oak is notoriously difficult to work with. The wood is porous, prone to leaking, and demands careful cooperage. When it works, though, it imparts something genuinely distinctive — an aromatic quality that's hard to replicate with European or American oak.

At 47%, this sits nicely above the standard 40-43% range that plagues so many blended releases. That extra strength isn't just a number on the label. It gives the whisky room to express whatever the Mizunara finish has contributed without the flavours feeling diluted or muddled. It's a decision that tells me someone in the blending room was thinking about the drinker, not just the accountant.

Tasting Notes

I'll be honest — I'd rather let you discover the specifics yourself than manufacture a shopping list of flavours. What I will say is that Mizunara finishes tend to bring a particular kind of incense-like, sandalwood complexity that you simply don't get from bourbon or sherry casks. Combined with the base blend at this strength, expect something layered and a touch exotic. The NAS designation means the blenders had latitude to select for flavour rather than age statements, which in skilled hands is often a strength rather than a weakness.

The Verdict

At £99.95, the Amahagan Edition No 3 asks you to take it seriously — and I think it earns that. You're paying for genuine Mizunara oak influence, a considered bottling strength, and a blend that's been assembled with real intention. In a market awash with lazy NAS releases padded out to hit a price point, this feels like something built with purpose. An 8 out of 10 from me. It's not trying to be everything to everyone, and it's better for it. If you're curious about what Mizunara can do to a well-constructed blend without remortgaging for a Yamazaki, this is a smart place to start.

Best Served

Pour it neat in a Glencairn and give it ten minutes to open up — the Mizunara character tends to bloom with a bit of air. If you want to add water, go sparingly: just a few drops. This also works beautifully in a Japanese-style highball with good soda water and a thin twist of lemon peel. The 47% ABV holds up to dilution better than most blends, and there's something about the Mizunara aromatics over ice and bubbles that makes for a genuinely elegant long drink.

Really enjoyable dram — honey, dried fruit, and a subtle spiciness that I think comes from the mizunara wood. It drinks smooth for 47% ABV. My only gripe is the £100 price tag feels steep for a blend with no age statement, but the finish is long and complex enough that I keep coming back to it.

Look, it's a good whisky. Warm vanilla, a hint of coconut, some gentle oak spice. The mizunara finish adds an interesting woody incense note that sets it apart. But for what you're paying I expected something that would knock my socks off, and it's more of a pleasant surprise than a revelation. I'd buy it again on sale.

I've been chasing mizunara-finished whiskies for a while now and this Amahagan No 3 genuinely delivers. There's this gorgeous sandalwood and incense thing on the nose that you just don't get from standard oak. At 47% it's got enough punch to carry all that delicate Japanese oak character without being harsh. Drinking it neat is the only way to go here.

Tried this neat after a mate brought it round and immediately ordered my own bottle. The nose is all dried apricot and sandalwood, and on the palate there's this lovely balance between sweetness and spice. At 47% it sits just right — warming but not aggressive. Been rationing it because I know I'll be sad when it's gone.

I'm usually skeptical of world blended whiskies but the Amahagan No 3 changed my mind. The mizunara finish gives it this unique incense-and-cedar quality that I haven't found in Scottish or American expressions. Poured it over a single large ice cube and it opened up beautifully — toffee, stone fruit, gentle baking spice. Worth every penny of the £99.
