Tasting Notes

Nose

Rich and indulgent — opens with woody and spicy notes like an aged rum. Cocoa, marzipan, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, coconut, prune and citrus fruit. A nose that could belong to a very fine old rhum agricole.

Palate

Deep, smooth, dynamic and structured. The pastry notes of the nose intensify with an even more chocolatey profile — malt, tobacco, coconut and nuts. Spicy notes of cinnamon, pepper and chilli interweave with woody warmth reminiscent of an old rum.

Finish

Dry and gently warming. The rum cask influence lingers with coconut and dark spice.

Aikan Extra Collection represents one of whisky's more unusual journeys. Distilled and initially aged in Scotland for a minimum of three years, the whisky then travels to Martinique for a second maturation of two to four years in aged agricultural rum casks and specially designed French oak barrels, all in the Caribbean's tropical climate.

The tropical aging is transformative. The Martinique heat accelerates the interaction between spirit and wood, while the aged rum casks contribute coconut, chocolate and spice notes that give the whisky a character closer to fine rhum agricole than conventional Scotch. The French oak barrels add their own distinctive influence — different from the American or Spanish oak used by most whisky producers.

Aikan Extra Collection is a gourmet whisky that defies easy categorisation. The rum-like nose, the chocolatey palate and the dry finish create an experience that will fascinate drinkers open to whisky's wilder possibilities. At £44.50 and 43%, it offers an affordable passport to something genuinely different — Scottish soul in Caribbean clothing.
