Tasting Notes

Nose

Toasted caramel, vanilla, dark oak, sliced red apple, cinnamon, licorice, burnt chocolate, orange zest — big but inviting

Palate

Honey and vanilla up front, then baking spices, black pepper, orange peel, brown sugar, leather, drying sweet oak — rich and full without excessive heat

Finish

Long and warm — lingering caramel, oak tannins, spice, the barrel proof delivering intensity that water-reduced bourbons simply cannot match

Launched in 1991 by Master Distiller Jimmy Russell — 'the Buddha of Bourbon' — who joined Wild Turkey in 1954 and is now in his 70th year at the distillery. Inspired by Booker Noe's barrel-proof concept, Rare Breed was one of the earliest barrel-proof bourbons on the market. A marriage of 6, 8, and 12 year old bourbons at 116.8 proof. No water added.
