Tasting Notes

Nose

Rye spice, vanilla, cinnamon, orange zest, nutmeg, hints of caramel and dried herbs — the rye grain announcing itself

Palate

Bold pepper and rye spice up front, then caramel sweetness, orange zest, vanilla — medium-bodied with pleasant warmth, a cocktail rye that drinks well neat

Finish

Medium-long — smooth, balanced spice, citrus, and oak fading together, the 90 proof providing structure without aggression

Named after America's first cocktail. In 1838, Creole apothecary Antoine Peychaud mixed brandy, absinthe, and his proprietary bitters for guests on Royal Street, New Orleans. Around 1870, the Sazerac Coffee House switched from cognac to rye whiskey after the Great French Wine Blight. Now distilled at Buffalo Trace. Six years old, 90 proof, known as 'Baby Saz.'
