Tasting Notes

Nose

Red fruit, glazed fruit-tart sweetness, orange peel, caramel, lemon peel, freshly cut grass, wintergreen — the Yoichi and Miyagikyo in conversation

Palate

Soft and fruity — honey, pear, starfruit, vanilla, cinnamon, spicy clove, cherry-menthol, gentle smoke, toasted grain — beautifully balanced

Finish

Sweet, slightly bitter dark chocolate, mellow oak, gentle peat — the two distillery characters meeting in a harmonious conclusion

Expert Review

7.5/10

Named after founder Masataka Taketsuru, whose family owned a sake brewery dating to 1733. He trained as a chemist, travelled to Scotland in 1918, married Scotswoman Jessie Roberta ('Rita'), and founded Nikka in 1934. A vatting of single malts from Nikka's two distilleries: peaty, coastal Yoichi and elegant, fruity Miyagikyo. World Whiskies Awards honours in 2007.
