Tasting Notes

Nose

Massive peat smoke and iodine — rich sweetness, fruity sherry, vanilla, Lapsang Souchong tea, cured meats, bonfire, driftwood, camphor, salted caramel, then gentle clementine and white peach

Palate

Rich dried fruit sweetness — sherry character with clouds of smoke, strong barley-malt, explosion of salty peppery smoke at the back, sixteen years creating depth that younger Islays cannot match

Finish

Huge, long, warming — peppery with appetising sweetness, peat and vanilla in perfect balance, the slow distillation's signature persistence

Expert Review

9/10

The benchmark Islay dram — established 1816, everything is slow at Lagavulin: 55-75 hour fermentation, 5-hour first distillation, 9+ hour second distillation, and sixteen years of maturation. Massive peat smoke and iodine with rich sherry sweetness. Double Gold at San Francisco 2022. Ron Swanson's whisky.
