Expert Review

8.1/10

Lagavulin's 10 Year Old offers a more direct, assertive take on the distillery's celebrated Islay character. At 43% ABV it's honest whisky — less polished than its older sibling but arguably more revealing of what makes this distillery so respected.

For £94 you're getting proper Lagavulin character — that signature coastal smokiness is all there. The 10 years gives it less of the dried fruit sweetness but more raw maritime energy. I prefer it with a few drops of water to open up the brine notes.

Decent Islay single malt, does the smoky seaweed thing well enough. My issue is the price — nearly a hundred quid for what feels like a stepping stone to the 16 Year Old is a tough sell. I'd rather save up or grab a Laphroaig Quarter Cask for less. That said, the peppery finish is genuinely enjoyable neat.

It's Lagavulin so the quality is there — ashy peat smoke, sea salt, a touch of green apple on the finish. Clean and well-made. But I keep comparing it to the 16 and at this price point the gap between them feels small enough that I'd just stretch the budget. Worth trying though, especially on the rocks in summer.

I grabbed this expecting a watered-down version of the 16 but honestly it's a different beast entirely. More vibrant peat, bright citrus cutting through the smoke — it drinks younger and livelier. At 43% it's perfectly sessionable neat. One of my favourite discoveries this year.
