7.6/10

Kaiyo's Peated Mizunara Oak blended malt is a genuinely unusual Japanese whisky that pairs smoke with sandalwood-like Mizunara influence at a convincing 46% ABV. At just under £100 it's not cheap, but it offers a flavour profile you won't find anywhere else on the shelf.

It's a solid dram. The peat is restrained and plays nicely with some citrus and honey notes, and there's a spicy finish that I assume is the mizunara influence. Good sipper neat but at nearly a hundred quid I'd want a bit more complexity for the money.

I've been on a Japanese whisky kick lately and the Kaiyo Peated is one of the better ones I've tried. The peat isn't aggressive at all, more like a background warmth that lets the oak and fruit notes shine. No chill filtration and 46% ABV so you know they haven't cut corners. Really enjoyed sharing this one with mates.

I was skeptical about a peated Japanese whisky but this really surprised me. The smoke is gentle, more campfire than Islay bonfire, and the mizunara oak gives it this lovely sandalwood and incense thing underneath. At 46% it's got enough punch to hold up neat without being harsh. Would happily buy again.

If you like Islay malts and want to see what Japan does with peat, this is a good starting point. It's gentler and more refined than most peated Scotch, with green tea and light honey notes coming through alongside the smoke. I drink it neat after dinner. Not a daily pour at this price but a nice treat.

This is exactly what I've been looking for. The balance between the smoky peat and the delicate floral sweetness from the mizunara oak is just spot on. I get dried fruit on the nose, clean smoke on the palate, and a long warm finish. Worth every penny of the £98 in my opinion.
