A cask-strength fourteen-year-old Glen Spey from a single Oloroso sherry butt, bottled by Single Cask Nation at natural strength. At £88.50, this under-the-radar Speyside malt offers genuine sherry-cask character and remarkable value for money.

Glen Spey doesn't get much attention as a single malt so I was curious about this one. Nose is lovely — raisins, Christmas cake, a bit of leather. On the palate it's pleasant but a touch one-dimensional after the initial sherry hit fades. Good whisky, just not quite worth the hype some independent bottlings get.

This is what I want from an oloroso cask — big dried fruit, dark chocolate, and a hint of orange peel without being overly tannic. At cask strength it really opens up with a few drops of water. Paid under £90 for a 14-year-old single cask at 57.5% and I'd call that fair all day long.
