Tasting Notes

Nose

Gentle peat smoke, heather, honey, hazelnut, violet, cinnamon — softer peat than any Scotch, the Irish character coming through

Palate

Honey sweetness leading, malt and fruit, vanilla oak, fresh peat emerging mid-palate — a gentler smokiness than Islay, distinctly Irish

Finish

Long — golden honey with deep spreading peat smoke, the double distillation creating a cleaner smoke than Scotch, though the 40% limits the impact

Expert Review

7/10

Ireland's only modern peated single malt — a genuinely rare style. Created by Cooley Distillery, founded 1987 by John Teeling to break Irish Distillers' monopoly. Launched 1999. Double-distilled (unusual for Irish, which typically triple-distils). Barley dried over Connemara bog peat at 14-15ppm. Eight Gold medals since 1996 including 'Best of Irish' at San Francisco 2004. Now under Suntory Global Spirits.
