Expert Review

7.9/10

Compass Box's Peat Monster at cask strength is a confident, muscular blended malt that delivers serious peat intensity at a price point that undercuts most single malt equivalents. At 53.9% ABV, it rewards patience and a splash of water.

Solid dram, no question. Thick smoke, charred wood, a bit of iodine — exactly what you'd expect from something called Peat Monster. My issue is the £90 price tag. For a blended malt with no age statement, you're paying a premium for the Compass Box name. I'd buy it again on sale but not at full whack.

I've been working through the Compass Box range and Peat Monster CS is the standout for me. At 53.9% it's got real punch — big campfire smoke on the nose, then this wave of maritime salt and dark honey. Added a few drops of water and it opened up beautifully with sweeter vanilla notes hiding underneath all that peat.
