Expert Review

8.1/10

A cask strength Highland single malt from Hart Brothers that lets Royal Brackla's honest, fruity character speak for itself. Fairly priced at £96.25 and bottled at a punchy 55.8% ABV, this is independent bottling done right.

Jackson Wu VIPsAllowed — Decent but not a showstopper

It's a perfectly fine whisky. Nice enough nose with some vanilla and light fruit, the palate is malty and warm with a hint of oak spice. Finish is medium length, nothing that lingers in your memory. At this price point I'd probably reach for a Clynelish or a Ben Nevis IB instead, but no complaints if someone poured me a glass.

This absolutely floored me. Rich honey and baked pear on the nose, then this gorgeous wave of brown sugar and spice on the palate. The cask strength really lets you play with it — neat it's bold and warming, with water it gets silky and the fruit notes come forward. One of the best indie Bracklas I've had.

I like Brackla as a distillery and this is a decent dram — creamy vanilla, a bit of malt and dried apricot. But nearly a hundred quid for a 12 year old is a tough sell when there are so many great IBs in that range. Worth trying at a bar before committing to a full bottle.

At 55.8% this Brackla packs a punch but it's not hot at all — loads of honey, stewed orchard fruit, and a whiff of beeswax on the nose. Twelve years in whatever cask Hart Brothers picked has done the job nicely. I add a few drops of water and it opens right up into toffee and gentle oak. Solid independent bottling.

Picked this up on a whim and I'm glad I did. Classic Highland profile done well — sweet malt, a touch of heather, some citrus peel in the finish. The 55.8% ABV carries the flavours without burning. I drink it neat after dinner and it hits the spot every time.
