A thirteen-year-old Highland malt finished in Sangiovese wine casks from Douglas Laing's Old Particular range — bold, individual, and smartly priced at £88.50 for a single cask bottling of genuine character.

Douglas Laing rarely let me down and this 13 year old Blair Athol is another good one from the Old Particular range. You get a nice balance of dried cherry and baking spice from the Sangiovese cask with that slightly waxy Highland character underneath. Not the most complex dram I've ever had but it's very easy drinking and well put together.

I grabbed this on a whim because I'm a sucker for wine cask finishes, and wow. The Sangiovese influence gives it this gorgeous red berry sweetness layered over classic Blair Athol honeyed malt. At 48.4% it's got enough punch to carry the fruit notes without being hot. Sipped neat over an evening and the empty glass smelled incredible.
