Picked this up because I'm trying to explore more Irish rye and it's a decent example. Warm baking spices, a bit of toffee, dry finish with some black pepper. It's well made but didn't blow me away the way I hoped it would at this price point.

Most five grain whiskeys I've tried feel muddled but Planxty Wilcox keeps everything distinct. You can taste the rye kick, the barley sweetness, and what I think is the oat giving it this creamy texture. Had it neat after dinner last night and it was perfect.

A friend brought this to a tasting and I ordered a bottle the next day. Lovely mix of cinnamon, caramel and a slightly nutty finish that lingers. The 47.5% is a sweet spot — strong enough to feel warming but smooth enough you don't need water. Really enjoyable stuff from Blackwater.

I usually drink my whisky neat but this one really opens up with a bit of ice. The 47.5% ABV means it doesn't fall apart when diluted — you start picking up more floral and citrus notes underneath all that rye spice. The Blackwater folks know what they're doing.

The five grain mashbill does something really special here. You get rye spice up front, then biscuity malt, a touch of dried apricot, and this long warm finish. I drink it neat and just let it open up for ten minutes. Planxty Wilcox is a proper sipper that rewards patience.

Look, it's a solid dram — nice peppery rye backbone with some orchard fruit and a hint of vanilla on the finish. But at nearly £94 I keep thinking about what else I could get for that money. I'd buy it again on sale but not at full price.

I wanted to love this more than I do. The nose is great — all toasted grain and dried fruit — but the palate feels a bit thin compared to what the ABV suggests. At £94 I think there are better options out there. Not bad by any means, just not the value I was hoping for.
