Expert Review

7.9/10

Aberlour A'Bunadh is a cask-strength Speyside single malt bottled at a commanding 60% ABV with no chill-filtration. A sherry-driven, full-bodied expression that rewards patience and a splash of water — serious whisky at a fair price.

This is what cask strength sherry bomb should taste like. At 60% ABV it's obviously hot neat, but add a few drops of water and it opens up into dark chocolate, stewed plums, and Christmas cake. One of the best value sherried malts you can find at this price point.

I've had three different batches of A'Bunadh and they genuinely vary quite a bit. This one leans more towards orange peel and dark chocolate than the sherry-forward ones I've had before. Solid whisky but at £95 I expect more consistency.

Maybe I got a weak batch but this didn't blow me away like everyone said it would. It's nice enough — sherry, some baking spices, a bit of sulphur on the finish that I'm not keen on. For £95 I'd rather grab a Glendronach 15.

Picked up a bottle of A'Bunadh after hearing about it for years and I'm not disappointed. Big dried fruit and nutty toffee on the nose, with a long spicy finish. It does need water though — straight from the bottle at 60% it's a bit of a beast.

I used to think cask strength whiskies were just about showing off with high ABV numbers. A'Bunadh completely changed my mind. The intensity of the dried fruit, dark chocolate, and espresso notes is something a 40% bottling just can't deliver. Worth every penny of that £95.
