Angel's Envy has built a reputation on finishing whiskeys in wine casks — it's their signature move. But their 2023 Cask Strength Rye marks genuinely new territory: the first time rye has entered the Cask Strength programme. At 114.4 proof and limited to just 5,500 bottles, this is a statement release. Having spent years tasting ryes across Singapore, Tokyo, and beyond, I can say with confidence — this one commands attention.
Appearance
Pour it and you'll notice immediately: a deep, dark orange edging into brown, closer to a well-aged Sauternes than a typical rye. It has the density of fine wine in the glass. The legs are extraordinary — they cling to the sides with no intention of letting go, thick ribbons that tell you exactly what kind of viscosity you're dealing with before you even bring it to your nose.
Nose
The Sauternes and toasted oak finishing does serious work here. Butterscotch and cream fold into each other magnificently — think the top of a freshly torched crème brûlée, that exact moment of caramelisation. Behind that, apricot drifts through with a delicate floral lift of lavender. It's refined without being shy, and at 57.2% ABV, remarkably composed. No ethanol burn pushing through; just layers waiting to unfold.
Palate
Here's where the rye reminds you what it is. Spice hits immediately — sharp, assertive, unmistakably grain-forward. But rather than staying aggressive, it transitions beautifully. The heat fades into warmer, rounder territory: toffee, butterscotch, that same creamy sweetness the nose promised. What impressed me most is how it moves across the palate. This isn't a whiskey that parks itself in one spot. It plays from front to back, each section of the tongue picking up something different. The blend of rye whiskeys selected from both Sauternes finishing casks and Toasted Oak finishing barrels creates a layered complexity that rewards patience.
Finish
Long. Genuinely, pleasantly long. The kind of finish where you set down your glass and five minutes later you're still picking up echoes of butterscotch and baking spice. It lingers without overstaying — you find yourself hoping it won't fade, and it obliges for longer than you'd expect from most ryes at any proof point.
Verdict
At $269.99 MSRP, this sits in premium territory, but the 2023 Cask Strength Rye earns its price. It defies the norm in the best possible way — this is a rye whiskey you can genuinely enjoy alongside dessert, something I'd rarely say about the category. The Sauternes and toasted oak finishing transforms the grain's natural spice into something more nuanced, more versatile.
As a debut for Angel's Envy's cask strength rye programme, this sets an exceptional standard. If subsequent releases maintain this level of craft, the series will become one of the most anticipated annual drops in American whiskey. A 9/10 — and I'll be first in line for the next one.
