Wemyss Malts have been doing something quietly interesting in the blended malt space for years now, and Spice King is arguably their flagship expression — the one that keeps turning up at tastings, on back bars, and in the collections of people who actually drink their whisky rather than photograph it. At 46% ABV and without an age statement, it sits in that sweet spot where the liquid has to do the talking, and frankly, it does.

For the uninitiated, Wemyss (pronounced "Weems") is a Fife-based independent bottler that takes a flavour-first approach to blending. Rather than leading with a age or a single distillery name, they build their blended malts around a taste profile — in this case, spice. It's right there in the name, and it's not false advertising. The Spice King range is built to deliver warmth, pepper, and character, drawing on Highland and Island malts to create something with genuine backbone.

What I appreciate about this bottling is the confidence of it. NAS whiskies get a bad reputation, often deservedly so, but Wemyss aren't hiding behind the lack of an age statement — they're using it as freedom. The 46% bottling strength, unchillfiltered, means nothing has been stripped out for the sake of shelf appeal. This is a whisky that was blended to taste a certain way, and it arrives in the glass exactly as intended.

What to Expect

The name gives you a strong steer. Spice King leans into peppery, warming territory — think maritime influence meeting baking spice, with enough malt sweetness to keep things balanced. The Island component brings coastal character without tipping into full peat-monster territory. It's assertive without being aggressive, which is harder to achieve in blending than most people realise. If you're coming from sherried Speysiders, this will feel like a different conversation entirely. If you're a fan of Talisker or Highland Park but fancy something at a more accessible price point, you're in the right neighbourhood.

The Verdict

At £39.25, Spice King represents genuinely good value in the current market. Try finding an unchillfiltered, 46% blended malt from a reputable independent bottler at this price — your options are thin. Wemyss have managed to produce something with real personality that doesn't ask you to remortgage. It's not the most complex whisky I've ever had, and it doesn't pretend to be. What it is, though, is honest, well-constructed, and consistently enjoyable. The kind of bottle you keep restocking because it earns its place on the shelf through regular use rather than collecting dust as a talking point. A 7.5 out of 10 feels right — this is a solid, reliable dram that punches above its price point and rewards anyone willing to look past the big distillery names.

Best Served

Pour it neat or with just a few drops of water to open up that spice character. It also works brilliantly in a Rob Roy — the vermouth and bitters complement the peppery warmth rather than fighting it, and at 46% it holds its own in the mix without disappearing. On a cold Edinburgh evening, I've been known to pour it slightly longer with hot water and a twist of lemon. Not canonical, but effective.
