Distilled at Buffalo Trace using the same wheated mashbill #2 as every Weller and the entire Pappy line, Special Reserve carries no age statement but generally runs around 7 years. It was for decades a forgotten value bourbon — until the Pappy hype rolled downhill.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose is soft and bakery-sweet — honey, vanilla, a little caramel apple. The palate follows through with brown sugar and vanilla custard, the wheat giving everything a buttery roundness.
Verdict
A wonderful introduction to wheated bourbon.
