Tasting Notes

Nose

Red fruit, vanilla, a gentle malty warmth. The Burgundy finishing adds a distinctive Pinot Noir character — cherry, raspberry, a gentle tannic structure. Beneath the wine, honey, malt and a gentle warmth.

Palate

Fruity and clean — Burgundy red fruit, honey, a gentle oak spice. The wine finishing adds an elegant fruit character without overwhelming the clean Highland malt. Mid-palate brings vanilla, a gentle warmth and a clean cereal sweetness.

Finish

Medium, with Burgundy fruit and a gentle warmth.

Tullibardine distillery in Blackford, Perthshire, has been revitalised under current ownership with a range that includes several wine cask finishes. The 228 — named for the size of the Burgundy barrique (228 litres) — finishes the standard Highland spirit in casks from the Burgundy wine region of France.

The Burgundy finishing adds a distinctive Pinot Noir character — cherry and raspberry fruit with a gentle tannic structure. The influence is delicate rather than assertive, complementing the clean Highland malt without dominating it.

Tullibardine 228 is a well-priced, wine-finished Highland malt that offers genuine character at a modest price. The Burgundy influence adds interest and distinction, and the clean Tullibardine spirit provides a receptive canvas. A good-value introduction to wine-finished Scotch whisky.
