Tasting Notes

Nose

Honeyed malt, ripe pear, vanilla pod and a light dusting of milled oak.

Palate

Medium-bodied and silken. Barley sugar, orchard fruit, toffee and gentle spice from the refill casks.

Finish

Long, clean and lightly oaked with lingering honey and a whisper of almond.

Tomintoul distillery was established in 1964 in the Glenlivet parish of Banffshire, sitting at the edge of the Cairngorms. The distillery brands itself 'the gentle dram of Speyside', and across the core range that unhurried, honeyed character is the consistent thread.

The 18 Year Old is a natural progression from the well-known 10 and 14 year expressions. Matured predominantly in traditional refill American oak casks, it has the time to deepen without losing the distillery's deliberately light, malt-forward house style. Bottled at 40% ABV, it is unmistakably a classical Speysider of the old school rather than a cask-strength statement piece.

Tomintoul was acquired by Angus Dundee Distillers in 2000, and since then the older age statements have had room to develop as the original 1960s stock matured. The 18 sits comfortably as an after-dinner dram, and it is the sort of bottle that rewards patience in the glass rather than demanding attention.

There is nothing theatrical here. No peat, no sherry bombast, no heavy oak. What it offers instead is the quiet confidence of well-aged Speyside spirit left largely alone: honey, orchard fruit, soft vanilla and an unforced finish. For drinkers who appreciate subtlety over spectacle, it is a dependable benchmark of the style.
