The 14 Year Old Port Wood has been a fixture of Tomatin's core range for some years, and a deserved one. It is matured first in traditional ex-bourbon casks and then transferred to Tawny Port pipes for an extended finishing period, before being bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration and without added colour. The port casks are not used as a cosmetic flourish; they are given enough time to actually shape the spirit.

Tomatin's gentle Highland distillate, with its orchard fruit and honeyed malt, takes well to port. The nose carries red berries, raisin, vanilla, baked apple and a thread of dark chocolate. There is a recognisable port sweetness without the syrupy quality that lesser finishes can fall into.

The palate is generous: honeyed barley, plum, raspberry jam, dried fig and a gentle oak spice underneath. The bourbon-cask years give it structure and a vanilla backbone, while the port adds colour, fruit and a slightly winey richness. The finish is long, fruity and softly drying, with port sweetness and warm oak fading together.

It has won its share of competition medals over the years and tends to be one of the first Tomatins recommended to drinkers exploring port-finished Highland malts. The combination of a sensible age statement, proper bottling strength and unhurried finishing time makes it a reliable choice. For the money it is hard to fault, and it gives a clear sense of what Tomatin's quiet, fruit-forward style can do when paired with a generous dose of fortified-wine cask.
