Tasting Notes

Nose

Warm vanilla and ripe oranges, toasted barley and rich spiced fruitcake. A delicate hint of cocoa. The eight years of oloroso finishing add genuine depth to the bourbon-matured base.

Palate

Waves of salted toffee and vanilla fudge coat the palate. Spicy oak emerges alongside vibrant candied citrus. A drizzle of floral honey adds sweetness, followed by caramelised walnuts and a subtle whisper of sea salt.

Finish

Long and maritime — the Mull coastal character threads through the sherry richness. A composed, elegant close.

The Tobermory 23 Year Old is the inaugural release in the Hebridean Series — a collection of aged, limited-edition expressions from Mull's harbour-front distillery. This whisky began life as the beloved Tobermory 15 Year Old, spending its first fifteen years in ex-bourbon casks before an additional eight years of maturation in the finest Gonzalez Byass oloroso sherry casks.

The eight years of oloroso finishing is exceptional. Most sherry finishes last months, not years, and the extended period allows the wine and spirit to reach a genuine integration that shorter finishes cannot achieve. The Gonzalez Byass provenance guarantees quality sherry wood, and the twenty-three years of total maturation provide genuine depth.

Tobermory 23 demonstrates that Mull's distillery can compete with Scotland's more celebrated names when given time and quality wood. The maritime-sherry combination is beautifully executed, and the quality justifies the premium. A strong start to the Hebridean Series.
