Tasting Notes

Nose

Packed with toffee and caramel, followed by almonds, blackcurrant and a hint of spice. The seventeen years of full oloroso maturation give the nose genuine richness.

Palate

Rose petals, tropical fruit, walnuts, cherry and creamy toffee. Balanced with oak, tannins and hints of leather. At 55.9% cask strength, the flavours arrive with real conviction. The full oloroso maturation shows in every sip.

Finish

Unusually dry and nutty with ginger spice. A distinctive close.

Tobermory 2004 Oloroso Cask Matured was distilled in 2004 and fully matured in oloroso sherry casks for seventeen years — no bourbon-cask base, just pure oloroso maturation from start to finish. Bottled at cask strength (55.9%), limited to 11,124 bottles, with natural colour and no chill filtration.

Full oloroso maturation creates a different Tobermory from the bourbon-then-sherry expressions. The seventeen years of exclusive sherry contact have produced a spirit of genuine richness — toffee, almonds, blackcurrant — with a texture that the cask-strength presentation amplifies magnificently. The island character — that coastal freshness — remains discernible beneath the sherry.

Tobermory 2004 Oloroso demonstrates what the Mull distillery can achieve with quality wood and patient maturation. The full oloroso maturation, the cask-strength bottling, and the seventeen years of age create a whisky of real distinction from a distillery too often overlooked. Limited and worth seeking.
