Tasting Notes

Nose

Stone fruit, honey, a gentle oak sweetness. The South African climate gives the maturation a warmth and generosity. Beneath the fruit, vanilla, a gentle nuttiness and a clean malty warmth. More expressive than expected.

Palate

Fruity and warm — stone fruit, toffee, a gentle oak spice. Twelve years in the warm Cape climate have produced a whisky of genuine maturity and character. Mid-palate brings dried apple, vanilla and a gentle warmth. At 43%, smooth and well-balanced.

Finish

Medium, with stone fruit and a gentle, warm oak sweetness.

Three Ships is South Africa's flagship whisky brand, produced at the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, Western Cape. The 12 Year Old is the distillery's premium single malt expression — twelve years of maturation in the warm, dry Cape climate producing a whisky with more richness and fruit character than equivalent expressions from cooler producing nations.

The Cape's warm climate creates an active maturation environment. The twelve years of interaction between spirit and wood have produced a whisky of genuine maturity — stone fruit, toffee, a gentle oak depth — with the accelerated maturation adding richness and concentration. The spirit is well-made, with a clean, malty character that supports the oak influence effectively.

Three Ships 12 Year Old is the most compelling evidence yet that South Africa can produce single malt whisky of genuine quality. The warm-climate maturation adds a dimension that cooler producers cannot replicate, and the twelve years of aging have given the whisky real depth and character. For drinkers interested in the expanding world whisky category, South Africa's contribution — led by Three Ships — deserves attention and respect.
